At the beginning of the first quarter of 2020, there was a recovery in the construction sector activities and partial improvements in the part of financing. However, the Covid-19 effect stopped this relative improvement and the construction industry was also negatively affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The construction sector, which is still fragile, may face the possibility of contraction in 2020. Within the struggle against the pandemic, many economic activities in Turkey temporarily suspended. However, the construction sector remains out of this scope as of the first quarter. Although construction companies slow down their work for preventive purposes or temporarily stop work in some of their projects, the construction sector still continues to operate.
The negative developments in the markets all over the world in 2020 continued to adversely affect the employment rate of the construction sector in Turkey. In March, when the effects of the pandemic are felt more intensely, the number of employees decreased 248000 considering the conditions of the working environment in the construction industry and the speed of the virus spread.
