Dr. Burcu Yılmaz Üren, Design Manager at Entegre Proje Yönetim A.Ş., noted that architectural design is one of the most important factors in attracting customers to a store and ensuring that this attraction remains sustainable over time. “The more customers a store attracts and the better it provides the comfort conditions that encourage them to stay longer, the more the number of customers, sales, and profitability rates increase in parallel,” she said.

What are the key factors in architectural design for retail stores?

The most important factors influencing the design of a space are the functions it will serve and the elements it will contain, such as products and people. Therefore, when considering stores, the type of products offered for sale is the most significant factor shaping design considerations. The products sold in a store dictate many factors, such as the store’s circulation area, shelving system, seating arrangement, sales area, product testing area, wet areas, product preparation area, lighting, ventilation, heating, cooling, color, texture, and materials. However, today, nearly all chain retail stores have a specific architectural design concept. In other words, no matter which store of a given brand you visit, all store locations are decorated in the same way and according to the same layout. This is actually one of the biggest factors that gives stores their identity and helps distinguish them from others. Accordingly, the second most important factor in store architectural design is the brand’s standard architectural concept. Beyond these two factors, when considering the design of local stores, it is evident that the geographical, cultural, and climatic characteristics of the region take center stage—whether in the materials and architectural elements used or in the spatial design. For example, the store decor for a store designed in coastal areas may differ from that of a store designed in inland areas farther from the coast, even if both are intended to sell similar products.

What are the effects of differentiation in store design on customer attraction?

In store architectural design, it is inevitable that customers will show either positive or negative interest in what is new and different from others. The greatest effect of differentiation in store design on customers is that it creates awareness of that store, establishing a symbol that distinguishes it from others or ensures it remains in their memory. When a customer visits a unique store, they come to recognize it later based on many factors such as its color, materials, comfort, circulation space, scent, and so on.

Could you summarize the role of “architectural design” in retail success and profitability?

Undoubtedly, many factors play a role in retail success and profitability, including financial data, marketing techniques, pricing strategies, product variety, customer relations, and so on. Beyond these factors, from a spatial perspective, architectural design is one of the most important factors that attracts people to a store and ensures the sustainability of that attraction. Therefore, from a very simple perspective, the more customers a store attracts and the better it provides the comfort conditions that encourage them to stay longer, the more customer numbers, sales, and profitability rates will increase accordingly.
